Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Improved Cash GenerationCash generation recovered materially versus 2025, with operating cash flow around $4.6B and positive free cash flow TTM. This sustained cash flow, despite a net loss, provides durable funding for capex, self-help investments, deleveraging and liquidity coverage through cycles, improving resilience.
Material Cost-savings ProgramManagement has delivered early tangible savings and upsized programs, targeting structural cost and productivity gains exceeding $1.3B this year and ~$700M from Transform to Outperform in 2026. These initiatives should sustainably improve margins and operating leverage over the medium term.
Strong Liquidity And Maturity ProfileA ~$14B liquidity buffer and limited near-term maturities give Dow durable financial flexibility to fund operations, execute strategic actions, and tolerate cyclical downturns. Extended revolver and staggered maturities reduce refinancing risk and support execution of self-help and portfolio moves.
Bears Say
Elevated And Rising LeverageLeverage has increased materially versus 2021–2024, with total debt near $21B and a debt-to-equity around 1.12. Higher leverage constrains strategic flexibility, raises interest and covenant exposure, and heightens risk if cyclical weakness persists or if cash flow reverts toward historical volatility.
Profitability DeteriorationDespite modest revenue growth, margins compressed sharply and Dow reported a TTM net loss, reflecting weaker spreads and operating leverage. Persistent margin pressure undermines return generation, limits retained earnings rebuild, and makes earnings recovery more sensitive to feedstock and pricing cycles.
Cyclical Volumes And Maintenance HeadwindsManagement flagged a sequential EBITDA decline driven by seasonality, planned turnarounds and regional volume softness. These structural cyclicality factors and periodic maintenance reduce revenue visibility and operating run-rate, slowing margin recovery and lengthening the timeline to durable profit improvement.
