Bulls Say, Bears Say
Bulls Say
Capital & Liquidity StrengthA CET1 ratio ~15.1% and strong liquidity metrics (LCR 147%, NSFR 116%) provide durable loss-absorbing capacity and funding resilience. This supports continued lending, regulatory compliance, and the bank's ability to sustain capital returns and absorb stress without forcing asset sales.
Diversified Fee Income & Wealth MomentumRising fee income and wealth inflows diversify revenue away from interest margins. AUM of $201bn and rapid digital wealth sales growth (TMRW +144% YoY) underpin recurring, higher-margin fee streams, improving revenue mix durability and reducing sensitivity to NIM cycles over the medium term.
Trade & Transaction Banking GrowthMaterial expansion in trade flows and trade lending increases fee- and transaction-driven income and strengthens corporate client relationships. Trade banking is sticky, supports cross-sell, and benefits from regional trade growth, providing stable franchise revenues less tied to interest rate cycles.
Bears Say
Net Interest Margin PressureGuidance for a lower full-year NIM implies sustained pressure on the bank's largest income source. As lending spreads compress, NII is likely to remain constrained, limiting topline growth and making earnings more reliant on fees and cost control to preserve profitability and returns.
Elevated Credit Costs & Regional HotspotsConcentrated problem exposures, notably commercial real estate in Greater China and the U.S., have driven higher provisioning and a preemptive $615m top-up previously. Elevated and regionally concentrated credit costs can persist, pressuring net income and constraining capital deployment over many quarters.
Volatile Cash Flow & Cooling ProfitabilityHighly variable operating and free cash flow, including a sharp 2024 swing and weaker 2025 FCF, reduce predictability of internal funding for dividends, buybacks and investments. Coupled with earnings cooling, this weakens confidence in sustaining capital returns and long-term cash conversion.
