In the eyes of the U.S. President, Donald Trump, if there’s one thing federal workers love, it is complaining about anything and everything and getting nothing done in the process. In a recent post on Truth Social (DJT) going viral, he portrayed the federal worker as a bleary-eyed SpongeBob, modern bureaucrat: exhausted, disengaged, and maybe just a little too fixated on the political drama. The message was clear; federal workers should start doing their jobs instead of wasting energy complaining about him and Elon Musk.

Nevertheless, President Trump has a different kind of list, and it’s a lot shorter: fire everyone (or at least as many as possible). The new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Musk and whose name seems inspired by Dogecoin, is leading a federal workforce purge that would make even the most brutal CEOs blush. With 75,000 jobs already axed and nearly 475,000 more in jeopardy, Washington, D.C., might soon have more open desks than a WeWork in 2020.

Ripple Effect on the Economy
However, this massive layoff could have a huge ripple effect on the economy. For example, retail giants such as Target (TGT), Walmart (WMT), and Costco (COST) could feel the squeeze as laid-off workers tighten their wallets and spend on cheaper products, buy less, all in an effort to cut living costs. The tech world isn’t safe either, with Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), and Tesla (TSLA) seeing fewer upgrades as people hold onto their ancient iPhones and their old laptops and postpone that shiny new EV purchases.
Trump calls it efficiency, while critics call it economic turbulence. Regardless, the days of comfortable government jobs may be limited.
