Toyota Motor (TM), Honda Motor (HMC), and other Japanese automakers said internal investigations found they mishandled vehicle testing on many of its models over the past decade, River David and Kiuko Notoya of The New York Times reports. Toyota said it failed to gather proper data when performing the pedestrian and occupant safety tests for three models. While the automakers said the testing failures would not affect performance or safety, Toyota said it would temporarily halt shipments of the affected models. Mazda (MZDAY) also said it would suspend sales of two Japan models. The testing problems were conducts in Japan to meet Japanese government’s certification standards. The vehicles at issue were sold in Japan.
