Stellantis has informed thousands of staff in Ohio and Michigan of potential job losses, attributing the workforce reduction partly to California rules that restrict where vehicles can be sold, AFP reports. The car maker notified 2,455 workers in Detroit and 1,225 in Ohio of potential layoffs under the federal Warn Act, which mandates early notification of major job cuts, the report says. Stellantis anticipates the actual number of job cuts to be “much lower” than the Michigan figure and “slightly lower” than the Ohio number, the report says, citing Stellantis spokeswoman Jodi Tinson. “Due to the complexity of our bargaining agreement related to the placement of affected employees, Warn notices were issued to more employees than will ultimately be impacted out of an abundance of caution to give employees notice even if not legally required,” Tinson said.
