Netflix (NFLX), Walt Disney (DIS), and other U.S. streaming companies have asked a Canadian court to halt plans by authorities to force the streaming companies to pay over 5% of their sales in the country in an attempt to finance local broadcast news and other domestic content, Paul Vieira of The Wall Street Journal reports. The Motion Picture Association-Canada stated the order from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission exceeds the regulator’s authority and fails to recognize the billions of dollars the companies spend in Canada each year. The Association represents Netflix, Walt Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), and Paramount Global (PARA).
