Meet WiSA: Exclusive interview with CEO Brett Moyer

In an exclusive interview with The Fly, WiSA Technologies’ (WISA) CEO Brett Moyer talked about the company, the industry, AI and much more.

IMMERSIVE AUDIO: WiSA Technologies develops, markets, and sells spatial audio wireless technology for smart devices and next-generation home entertainment systems. “Wisa is a technology company for wireless audio that is positioned for the exploding growth around immersive audio. When we talk about immersive audio, we’re talking about not just sound coming out of the front of the TV, but maybe out of side speakers or rear speakers so that you hear the audio as if you were in that football stadium or in a movie theater, or in at a rock concert or symphony. These immersive technologies also give you vertical audio. WiSA’s role in wireless is to make it easy for the consumer to set up that immersive audio very quickly in their home, because they don’t have to pull cables. They just plug in a powered speaker. Our modules will actually let you have eight channels of audio per speaker,” CEO Brett Moyer explained in an exclusive interview with The Fly.

WISA E TECHNOLOGY: In a recent letter to shareholders, the company said that the “groundbreaking technology” WiSA E represents “a transformative milestone and new chapter for WiSA Technologies.” WiSA E operates in 5GHz portion of the Wi-Fi spectrum and can transmit eight independent 48kHz PCM audio channels with low latency and tight speaker synchronization. Ideal for TV, soundbar, wireless surrounds, and subwoofer applications; WiSA E supports the WiSA Association’s interoperability standard for maximum flexibility and scalability.

“The groundbreaking part is you can license it from us. It’s interoperable. So, it’s not just within one TV and one TV brand’s audio. When you license WiSA E for interoperability, it means that a TV can talk to anybody’s speakers that are enabled with a module. We think interoperability is important for the consumer. The consumer should have a choice to buy whatever brand it prefers,” the executive added.

GLOBAL COMPANY: WiSA is headquartered in the U.S. but has sales teams in several other countries. “We have engineering teams, product marketing, warehousing, shipping in Oregon. And we have engineers in India under a consulting contract. So, we’ve expanded the engineering base internationally from a sales perspective. We have a salesperson in each of the major countries,” Moyer told The Fly.

AI VALUE: AI seems to be touching every sector and the wireless and immersive audio space is no exception. WiSA’s CEO believes there are “advantages as we evolve to optimize the audio sound in a room. As people move around, as furniture moves around, I can see where I can change how the algorithms that run the audio impact it. I mean, that’s not immediate, but certainly could have an impact.”

CONTINUE TO GAIN MORE RESPECT: WiSA’s CEO says based on the company’s market cap, it seems that Wall Street hasn’t fully understood its potential. However, based on conversations with investors, the executive believes the community is on its way to fully embrace what WiSA has to offer. “This new technology is groundbreaking. We have signed five licenses already, and these are all multinational, multi-billion-dollar revenue companies. I think as Wall Street sees more licenses being signed and products starting to ship later this year under those licenses, we’ll continue to gain more respect.”

“Meet the Company” is The Fly’s recurring series of exclusive short interviews with Executive Officers to offer a deeper look inside the company.
