Under new rules to be released by U.S. officials as soon as this month, Google (GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT) may be empowered to act as gatekeepers worldwide for access to AI chips, two people familiar with the draft plan told Reuters’ Alexandra Alper and Karen Freifeld. Under the draft plans, these companies would have to comply with strict requirements, from reporting key information to the U.S. government to blocking Chinese access to AI chips, and the rules would permit them to offer AI capabilities within the cloud overseas without a license, the sources said. The plans would include exemptions for 19 allied countries, while nuclear embargoed nations remain blocked, the report added.
