Hedge fund founder George Weiss filed a defamation suit in New York against Jefferies Financial (JEF), alleging the bank engaged in a “smear campaign” in an attempt to force him to pay a roughly $100M debt owed by his bankrupt firm, Jonathan Randles of Bloomberg reports. The suit seeks at least $250M in damages for alleged libelous and slanderous statements critical of how Weiss lead Weiss Multi-Strategy Advisers, according to Bloomberg.
