CNN, a unit of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), is planning to lay off hundreds of employees this week amid a refocus around a global digital audience, CNBC’s Alex Sherman reports. The cuts will help CNN lower production costs and consolidate teams, according to people familiar with the matter. The job cuts won’t affect CNN’s most recognizable names, who are under contract, the people say. NBC News, a unit of Comcast’s (CMCSK) (CMCSA) NBCUniversal, is also planning layoffs this week, although the scale will be much smaller than those at CNN, Sherman writes. The job losses at NBC News could be well under 50, two people familiar say.
