CMA provisionally clears Broadcom deal to buy VMware

Following its initial Phase 1 investigation, the Competition and Markets Authority, or CMA, identified competition concerns warranting in-depth review and referred Broadcom’s (AVGO) deal to buy VMware (VMW) to a Phase 2 inquiry, the agency noted. “After examining the evidence gathered from Broadcom, VMware and other interested parties, an independent CMA panel has provisionally found the deal would not substantially reduce competition in the supply of server hardware components in the UK,” the agency announced. “Today’s findings are provisional, and the CMA will now consult on its findings and listen to any further views before reaching a final decision. The CMA welcomes responses from interested parties to its provisional findings by 9 August 2023. These will be considered ahead of the CMA issuing its final report, which is due by 12 September 2023,” the CMA noted.
