Most of Chile was left without electricity on Tuesday afternoon following the biggest outage in 15 years, with power to major copper mines shut off and the government telling workers to evacuate, Bloomberg’s Carolina Gonzalez and James Attwood report. The affected area extends from the Peruvian border in the north to the southern region of Los Lagos more then 2,500 kilometers further south, according to the report. Interior Minister Carolina Toha blamed a transmission line “disconnection” for the blackout and ruled out sabotage. Publicly traded companies in the copper sector include Freeport McMoRan (FCX), Southern Copper (SCCO), Rio Tinto (RIO), BHP (BHP), and Glencore (GLNCY).
