U.S. natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy (CHK) has approached Southwestern Energy (SWN) about a potential acquisition that would create a combined company that would become the largest natural gas-focused exploration and production company in the U.S. by market value, according to Reuters’ David French, citing people familiar with the matter. Chesapeake’s talks with Southwestern are preliminary and Chesapeake has been exploring other potential acquisitions, and may end up pursuing a different target, the report added that the sources said. Southwestern Energy shares are up nearly 6% in afternoon trading.
