The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted 89 people, or 4.1% of passengers, aboard Royal Caribbean’s (RCL) Radiance of the Seas cruise experienced gastrointestinal illness symptoms. The outbreak was reported on February 4. Two crew members, 0.2%, also reported being ill on the ship. While the cause of the outbreak is unknown, predominant symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting. In response to the outbreak, Royal Caribbean International and the crew aboard the ship reported the following actions: increased cleaning and disinfection procedures according to their outbreak prevention and response plan; collected stool specimens from gastrointestinal illness cases for testing; isolated ill passengers and crew and consulted with Vessel Sanitation Program about sanitation cleaning procedures and reporting ill cases.
