The Biden administration is closing an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Dilley, Texas, which had long been used to jail migrant families who crossed the southern border illegally, ICE officials said, The Wall Street Journal’s Michelle Hackman reports. The administration plans to shutter the detention center, known as Dilley, this summer because it is far more expensive to operate than other ICE facilities. The administration wants to free up funds to pay for more detention space following President Biden’s executive action on the border last week, the officials said. The administration estimates that, by closing Dilley, it will be able to pay for up to 1,600 additional detention beds elsewhere, the author adds.
