Amazon is shuttering its operations in Quebec, resulting in the loss of roughly 1,700 full-time positions, Reuters’ Deborah Sophia and Allison Lampert report, citing a company spokesperson. The company will phase out operations across seven sites in the Canadian province, the only location in Canada with unionized Amazon workers, over the next two months, the authors say. The ecommerce giant plans to return to a third-party delivery model, relying on local businesses, the authors note. “Following a recent review of our Quebec operations, we’ve seen that returning to a third-party delivery model … will allow us to provide even more savings to our customers,” Amazon spokesperson Barbara Agrait said.
