Activision asks judge to dismiss suit from Uvalde families, Polygon says

In December, Microsoft (MSFT)-owned Activision filed a request asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit from families of victims killed or injured in a 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which claims that the “Call of Duty” maker played a role in “chewing up alienated teenage boys and spitting out mass shooters,” Polygon’s Nicole Carpenter. In the request, the company invoked California’s anti-SLAPP statutes, which exist to protect companies’ “right to engage in creative expression,” the author notes. Activision’s lawyers said in the response that the litigation “is the latest attempt to revive an old playbook, echoing claims made in lawsuits filed in the aftermath of Columbine and other violent crimes,” Carpenter says.
