Tencent and Baidu Integrate DeepSeek Search AI to Supercharge Apps

Chinese tech companies Tencent Holdings (TCEHY) and Baidu (BIDU) are integrating and testing DeepSeek’s AI (artificial intelligence) model to supercharge their apps’ search engines. Tencent said on February 16 that it has begun testing DeepSeek AI’s capabilities in its Weixin messaging app, boasted as China’s largest. Users will be able to access DeepSeek absolutely free by clicking on the “AI Search” option on Weixin. Similarly, Baidu said that it will fully integrate its search engine with DeepSeek’s R1 model as well as its own Ernie chatbot.

Tencent Goes All in on DeepSeek

Weixin is Tencent’s domestic version of the internationally used WeChat messaging app. The two apps together boast roughly 1.38 billion monthly active users. Tencent is only integrating DeepSeek in the domestic app currently, as WeChat is used by users worldwide. Until now, Weixin was using Tencent’s own Hunyuan large language model (LLM) to bolster its AI search.

Weixin is used popularly for chatting, sharing documents, watching videos, making online payments, and shopping. Tencent is also looking to integrate several other products with DeepSeek, such as its Cloud AI Code Assistant and its AI Assistant App Yuanbao, soon.

Chinese Tech Giants Race to Embrace DeepSeek

Ever since DeepSeek’s cheaper and more efficient R1 model rattled global markets on January 20, more and more Chinese tech giants have been racing to embrace DeepSeek. Several companies, including NetEase (NTES), BYD (BYDDF), and ByteDance, have already started using DeepSeek’s AI model in their products.

Additionally, China’s biggest telecom providers, including China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, have deployed DeepSeek AI in their systems. Also, Chinese smartphone makers, auto manufacturers, and financial services companies are rushing to integrate DeepSeek into their systems.

The pace at which Chinese companies are integrating DeepSeek clearly reflects the AI startup’s massive impact on the market. DeepSeek’s launch has started a war between the U.S. and China to establish themselves as the AI superpower. Both countries are trying to dominate the AI landscape with their innovations and technology.
