Square Enix Promises Dragon Quest 12 Isn’t Canceled

It’s been four years since Square Enix (JP:9684) announced Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate entered development with next to no news about the latest entry in the long-running turn-based role-playing game series. However, that silence has finally been broken by series creator and developer Yuji Horii. He confirmed development is underway and told fans he hopes to release more information soon.

That doesn’t mean Dragon Quest fans will get loads of info all at once. Instead, Hojii wants to share small teasers about the game over time. This trickle method of releasing information helps keep the game in the public consciousness while not spoiling too much about the upcoming adventure.

What We Know About Dragon Quest 12

What little is known about Dragon Quest 12 is that it will be a darker, more serious game than those typically found in the series. That includes introducing choices that can affect characters in the game. There’s also been talk that Square Enix plans to shake up the series turn-based combat, which has remained largely untouched throughout its nearly 40-year history.

Dragon Quest might not be a household name in the U.S., but it has a huge following worldwide, especially in Square Enix’s home country, Japan. The video game series has sold an estimated 93 million units across various titles. The most recent entry, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, sold over 7 million units.
