Brin’s Journey to Fame
Brin is originally from Russia, but moved to the U.S. at the age of six, along with his parents. He has earned a Master of Science degree from Stanford University and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland. During his education at Stanford, Brin met Page, with whom he co-founded the world’s largest search engine Google in 1998.
In 2001, Brin stepped down from the Chairman role of Google (before it converted to Alphabet) and became President of Technology. In 2004, Google went public and by 2015, Google had grown into a massive tech giant with many arms, converting into a parent company Alphabet.
According to a November 2024 filing, Brin owns shares of both Google’s Class B and Class C common stock, adding to a nearly 6% stake in the business. Brin has a roughly 42% stake in Alphabet’s Class B shares alone.
Remarkably, Alphabet has a complicated shareholding structure, with three classes of shares. Class A shares entitle the shareholder to one vote each, while each Class B share gives ten votes per holding. Class C shares (GOOG) do not have any voting rights. Also, Class B shares are convertible to Class A shares on a one-to-one ratio. Together Sergey and Page own 51% of the voting power of Alphabet, backed by their large stake in Class B shares.
Brin’s Other Investments
Apart from his investment in Google parent Alphabet, Brin has invested in a few other companies as well. He was one of the earlier investors in billionaire Elon Musk founded EV (electric vehicle) maker Tesla (TSLA). He also invested in genomics company 23andMe, cultured meat-producing company Mosa Meat, and marine engineering company Navier.
Interestingly, Brin also donates toward special causes such as Parkinson’s disease because his mother suffered from the same. To date, Brin has donated over $1 billion toward the cause of finding an apt cure for the disease. Brin also has a profound interest in air travel and has invested millions in LTA Research, which translates to Lighter Than Air. LTA is focused on developing the next generation of airships.
