Sam Altman-led OpenAI launched its first-ever AI (artificial intelligence) agent, Operator to rival Anthropic’s Computer Use unveiled last year. OpenAI’s Operator is capable of performing web-based tasks such as typing, clicking, scrolling, booking vacations or restaurants, filling online forms, and ordering groceries. The feature has been added to OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT and is available only to ChatGPT Pro members in the U.S. for now.

Here’s What OpenAI’s Operator Can Do
OpenAI added that Operator is currently in the research preview mode. This means that it has limitations and will be improved based on user feedback, justifying its availability to select users for now. For now, the AI agent can replicate and perform tasks that the user performs on a daily basis. However, Operator is unable to efficiently manage calendars or create slideshows, among other limitations.
Over time and once the final version is ready, OpenAI will release Operator to other users, including Plus, Team, and Enterprise. Additionally, the company plans to integrate Operator into ChatGPT. Operator directly competes with Anthropic’s Computer Use agent, which is capable of carrying out complex tasks, including navigating websites, real-time internet browsing tasks, entering texts, and selecting buttons,
Meanwhile, OpenAI is fully aware of the legal fallouts of sharing users’ personal information for training AI models. Hence, the company has already built an option that users can turn off, such as the “improve the model for everyone,” helping users protect their data. Furthermore, users can clear browsing data at any time or log out of websites with just one click on the privacy setting. Also, while Operator is performing the automated task, a user can take control of the task at any time.
AI companies are now engaged in a heated race to capture the opportunities in the artificial general intelligence (AGI) market, pushing their boundaries to create powerful computer systems that can perform tasks as perfectly as humans. Several listed players are involved in the AI race. OpenAI is massively backed by Microsoft (MSFT) with its billion-dollar investment, while Amazon (AMZN) and Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google are pouring billions into Anthropic. Meta Platforms (META), Apple (AAPL), and several private startups are also developing their own AI agents. The revenue from AI is predicted to reach at least $1 trillion in a decade.
