Sam Altman-led OpenAI launched its latest generative AI (artificial intelligence) model “Deep Research” to counter the growing competition from China’s DeepSeek. Deep Research is meant to facilitate multi-step research on the internet through user inputs. The model enables users to undertake complex tasks in significantly lesser time compared to that taken by humans.

AI companies worldwide are competing to launch different use cases-based AI agents, such as Deep Research. This is Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI’s second AI agent launch this year. The company launched the Operator model in January, which is capable of performing web-based tasks such as typing, scrolling, booking vacations or restaurants, and ordering groceries online.
Here’s More About Deep Research
Interestingly, Deep Research is backed by OpenAI’s advanced reasoning model called OpenAI O3, which is yet to hit the market. O3 is meant to optimize the user’s web browsing and data analysis capabilities, the company claims.
The model works in a seamless manner on simple user commands. Once the user gives the command, Deep Research instantly surfs the internet to find, analyze, and combine related online sources, text, PDFs, and images, to produce a comprehensive report. This report is comparable to a deeply studied analyst report, OpenAI boasts. Moreover, OpenAI claims that the report is produced in minutes compared to a human’s hours of work.
OpenAI’s Deep Research Has Limitations
Despite its extensive research capabilities, Deep Research is still in the nascent stage, and OpenAI does not guarantee the full authenticity of the generated content. For instance, the model is unable to clearly distinguish between authoritative content and rumors and fails to give apt citations due to the “hallucination” effect. Deep Research also lacks the tact to accurately confide about the uncertainty of certain reports or data, the company said.
OpenAI launched the model yesterday, February 2, for the web version of its famed ChatGPT model. The version for mobile apps and desktop apps will also be launched this month itself, OpenAI added. The model is currently available to the Pro users and will be released for the Plus and Team subscribers soon. The tool was first showcased for and discussed with a slew of policymakers, lawmakers, and officials in Washington for initial approval.
