Nintendo (NTDOY) has riled up fans after the video game company revealed price details for the Nintendo Switch 2 and its games. The upcoming console, with a June 5 release date, is priced at $450, or at least it was until Nintendo delayed its preorders in North America. The company is reevaluating the price for the console in light of President Donald Trump’s new tariffs announced last week.
This has some gamers worried that the Nintendo Switch 2 will see a significant price increase. That comes alongside backlash over game prices. Nintendo announced that Mario Kart World, a Switch 2 launch title, will cost $80. That’s a $20 jump over the price of first-party Switch games, excluding The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which was $70. Gamers have flooded Nintendo’s social media accounts with calls for it to lower game prices. However, Nintendo has argued that Mario Kart World is worth the $80 price tag.
Nintendo Says Gamers Can Buy the Original Switch Instead
In an interview last week, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser argued that the Switch 2 is worth its price tag. Granted, this comment was made before Nintendo canceled preorders in light of Trump’s tariffs.
At the time, Bowser argued that gamers who couldn’t afford the Switch 2 could still play games on the original Switch. He said the company intends to continue releasing new games for the console into 2026.
This comment hasn’t been well received by gamers, who have likened Bower’s stance to Microsoft’s (MSFT) Xbox One reveal controversy. Tone-deaf comments concerning digital rights management resulted in the company recanting on restrictions and likely led to the departure of then Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business President Don Mattrick.
Is Nintnedo Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?
Turning to Wall Street, the analysts’ consensus rating for Nintendo (NTDOF) is Moderate Buy based on six Buy, two Hold, and one Sell ratings over the last three months. With that comes an average price target of $80.55, representing a potential 20.57% upside for NTDOF stock.
