Microsoft’s Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remake Could Get a Surprise Release

Microsoft (MSFT) is reportedly preparing to return to Cyrodiil sooner than expected. Virtuous, a developer geared toward remaking and remastering games, could release The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake within the next few months. The exact release window varies, with some sources claiming the launch will be next month, while others say the game will come out before June.

A remake of Oblivion might seem unneeded, and it is, but the game did come out almost 20 years ago. It’s easy to forget that when the latest game in the series is its sequel The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. That’s because Skyrim has been consistently rereleased for new consoles since it first came out in 2011, a fate the Oblivion remake might share as Bethesda pads time until The Elder Scrolls VI is ready.

What to Expect from the Oblivion Remake

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake will reportedly use Unreal Engine 5 and bring with it new features and altered gameplay. Some changes worth noting include updates to blocking, shooting arrows, stealth mechanics, attacks, and the HUD. All of these are designed to bring the game into 2025 and meet modern player expectations.

Since the Oblivion remake hasn’t been officially announced, it’s unknown what consoles it will come out on. Bethesda, the original developer of the game, was bought by Microsoft in 2021. That would normally limit the game to Xbox consoles, but Xbox head Phil Spencer has focused on multiconsole releases this generation to make up for lackluster console sales.

Is MSFT Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?

Turning to Wall Street, the analysts’ consensus rating for Microsoft is Strong Buy based on 29 Buy and two Hold ratings over the last three months. With that comes an average price target of $508.43, a high of $600, and a low of $450. This represents a potential 34.06% upside for MSFT stock.
