Microsoft-backed (MSFT) artificial intelligence (AI) startup company OpenAI has launched a new version of its popular ChatGPT model for use specifically among U.S. government agencies.
OpenAI says the new AI chatbot goes a step beyond ChatGPT Enterprise as far as security is concerned. It allows government agencies to feed “non-public, sensitive information” into OpenAI’s models while operating within their own secure internet hosting environments.
Since the beginning of 2024, OpenAI said that more than 90,000 employees of federal, state, and local governments in the U.S. have generated nearly 20 million prompts using the conventional version of ChatGPT, from translating documents into different languages to summarizing documents, and drafting memos.
AI for Government
Called “ChatGPT Gov,” the new AI application will see government agencies use the technology in their own Microsoft Azure commercial cloud, or Azure Government community cloud. OpenAI says this will provide the highest level of security and privacy for various government agencies.
Analysts were quick to call ChatGPT Gov a major breakthrough, noting that AI has, until now, faced significant government scrutiny due to its potentially harmful ripple effects and over data privacy concerns. ChatGPT Enterprise, which underpins ChatGPT Gov, is currently going through the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program and has not yet been accredited for use on nonpublic data.
