M Earnings: Macy’s Stock Dives on Dour Outlook

Story Highlights

Macy’s stock dropped Thursday after the retail chain reported mixed Q4 results and lackluster 2025 guidance.

M Earnings: Macy’s Stock Dives on Dour Outlook

Macy’s (M) stock dove today after the retail chain released its Q4 2024 earnings report. That’s despite adjusted earnings per share of $1.80, which beat Wall Street’s estimate of $1.54. However, the company’s adjusted EPS was down 26.5% year-over-year compared to $2.45. It also announced its intention to resume share buybacks under its $1.4 billion authorization.

Macy’s Q4 revenue was $7.77 billion, which missed Wall Street’s estimate of $7.78 billion. It also represented a 4.31% decrease from the $8.12 billion in revenue reported in Q4 2023. This came alongside a 1.1% year-over-year drop in comparable sales.

M investors aren’t happy about the latest earnings report, sending shares 3.83% lower in pre-market trading today. That extended M stock’s 21.38% year-to-date loss and its 31.88% 52-week drop.

2025 Macy’s Stock Guidance

Unfortunately for M stockholders, 2025 isn’t looking good for the company. It expects adjusted EPS of $2.05 to $2.25 during the year, which would miss Wall Street’s estimate of $2.58. The company’s revenue guidance of $21 billion to $21.4 billion would also fall short of analysts’ $21.34 billion estimate at its $21.2 billion midpoint.

Macy’s has entered the second year of its Bold New Chapter strategy to revitalize its business. Chairman and CEO Tony Spring said the company plans “to scale initiatives that are resonating with our customers to drive long-term profitable growth and further unlock shareholder value.”

Is M Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?

Turning to Wall Street, the analysts’ consensus for Macy’s is Moderate Buy based on four Buy, six Hold, and one Sell ratings over the last three months. With that comes an average price target of $15.78, a high of $19, and a low of $9. This represents a potential 18.56% upside for M stock. These ratings and price targets will likely change as analysts update their coverage after today’s earnings.
