GameStop (NYSE:GME) and AMC Plunge as Roaring Kitty Revival Fizzles

Story Highlights

GME stock plunges 10% in a day to wipe out its 2025 rally as investors question what next for the meme stock.

The Roaring Kitty revival seems to be fizzling as shares of meme stocks GameStop (GME) and AMC Entertainment (AMC) plunged yesterday to wipe out what was left of gains since the start of the year.

Stay Ahead of the Market:

Meme stock traders were left yowling as GME fell over 10% on Tuesday, January 14th, to notch its fourth straight day losses. AMC also declined more than 7% to take its losses for the year to almost 20%. GME is now down 9% YTD after yesterday’s decline.

Promising Start for GME and Other Meme Stocks in 2025

2025 had kicked off on a high note for the meme stock crowd with Unity Software (U) stock jumping after a post from day trader influencer and investor Roaring Kitty, also known by his real name, Keith Gill. But after soaring as much as 15% during the first trading session of the year, U stock is now down 10% YTD. GME shares rose as much as 9% in the first trading week of the year as well.

Gill sparked a major rally for GME shares last year when he made a surprise comeback on social media in May after three years of relative quiet in the wake of the meme stock mania of 2021.

By June the stock had jumped again after the company used the rally to sell more shares and Gill revealed he had built a $260 million stake in the company made up of five million shares and 120,000 call options.

Subsequently, GME shares ripped higher following a December 25th post by the day trader showing a gift. Trading volumes for GameStop rose sharply the following day, reaching nearly five times the 20-day average, according to data compiled by Bloomberg

It seems the start of 2025 is just as rocky as ever for the stock – the question investors want to know is “what’s next for GME?”
