Musk Is Upbeat on Grok 3’s Capabilities
Last week, Musk teased the launch of Grok 3 during a video conference at the World Government Summit in Dubai. Musk boasted that Grok 3 displayed superior performance to all AI bots released so far globally. Importantly, Grok 3 has been trained on synthetic data, which means that the model is capable of reflecting upon its output to find mistakes and correct them by revisiting the data. This process ensures logical consistency, Musk added.
At the time, Musk said that he would go offline for the weekend and spend the time enhancing the product with the team. Musk has been very careful about the launch of Grok 3. He said that he would not rush with the launch since he aims to provide the best user experience possible through the foundational AI model.
Here’s How Musk’s AI Vision Is Shaping Up
Musk launched xAI in July 2023. It quickly became one of the most valuable AI startups. In the last funding round in November 2024, xAI was valued at $50 billion. Some of its investors include chip giants Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD (AMD), and large U.S. venture capital firms. It also has investments from Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Musk’s xAI is competing fiercely with ChatGPT maker OpenAI, which was also one of Musk’s own ventures. He left OpenAI in 2018 over a disagreement related to the startup’s ambition to go for-profit. Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI is valued at north of $300 billion currently. Musk has been very vocal about the pace of AI development and the possible harm to humans.
He has also filed a lawsuit against OpenAI’s Sam Altman for seeking to convert the original mission of the non-profit organization. Simultaneously, he made a $97.4 billion bid to acquire OpenAI’s non-profit organization to pause its transformation process. Notably, OpenAI’s board has rejected the offer, and Altman says that “OpenAI is not for sale.”
Meanwhile, the advent of DeepSeek in January has forced companies to accelerate the pace of AI development. The U.S. does not want to be left behind in the race to become the world’s AI superpower. DeepSeek’s R1 is made using Nvidia’s older GPUs (graphic processing units) at a much cheaper rate but offers equal quality to OpenAI’s o1 foundational model. It also overtook ChatGPT to become the world’s most downloadable app on launch.
