Dow Jones Dips Alongside Economic Data

Story Highlights

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped Monday as investors absorbed manufacturing data and ongoing trade war tariff threats.

Dow Jones Dips Alongside Economic Data

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is down today as investors absorb the latest economic data. That includes a manufacturing slip compared to January, but the PMI remains high enough to signal economic expansion.

Adding to this are ongoing discussions about tariffs and how they will affect the U.S. economy. President Donald Trump is expected to announce new tariffs on Canada and Mexico after delaying their start last month. There’s also another tariff set to hit China at the same time.

With all of this news comes a 0.56% drop for the DJIA, chipping away at its year-to-date gain of 3.05%. It also bears mentioning that the Dow Jones is down 2.61% over the last three months.

Which Stocks Have the DJIA Down Today

Turning to the TipRanks Dow Jones Industrial Average heatmap, investors will see which stocks are keeping the index down on Monday. Instances of deep red today come from UnitedHealth (UNH), Caterpillar (CAT), and Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA). There are also minor drops from Microsoft (MSFT), Walmart (WMT), Home Depot (HD), and Chevron (CVX) to consider.

How to Invest in the Dow Jones Index?

Investors can’t take a direct stake in the Dow Jones as it’s only an index. Instead, they might consider buying shares listed on it. One option would be buying stocks down today in hopes of rebounds. Another is purchasing stocks already rising in the hope of further gains.

There’s a third option that traders might want to consider when investing in the Dow Jones. They could purchase shares of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the DJIA index. Some ETFs bet on or against the Dow Jones, giving investors two sides to consider. One popular choice in favor of the index is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (ETF) while the ProShares UltraPro Short Dow30 (SDOW) is against it.
