Chinese AI-disruptor DeepSeek will make its models’ source code publicly available as it continues on its path of “full transparency.”

Humble Building Blocks
The startup shocked its U.S. rivals such as Nvidia (NVDA) and Microsoft (MSFT) when it revealed its open-source R1 reasoning AI model last month offering similar capabilities and performance but at lower cost. The company has now declared on social media platform X that it will open source 5 code repositories next week. It called this “small but sincere progress” that it will share “with full transparency.” The post added: “These humble building blocks in our online service have been documented, deployed and battle-tested in production.”
Open Source Is Culture not Commerce
Its open-source approach makes DeepSeek stand out from both its U.S. rivals and most AI firms in China which lean more towards closed-sourced models. According to Reuters, DeepSeek’s founder Liang Wenfeng said in an interview last July, that it did not prioritize commercializing its AI models and that there was soft power to be gained from open source. “Having others follow your innovation gives a great sense of accomplishment,” Liang said at the time. “In fact, open source is more of a cultural behavior than a commercial one, and contributing to it earns us respect.”
It is not all philanthropic, however. Open source allows developers to download and fine-tune AI models but they still have to pay fees to access these through APIs. Nvidia stock was flat after the news emerged with Microsoft also largely unmoved.
