AAPL Supplier’s New Battery Breakthrough Could Be a Gamechanger

Story Highlights

Apple supplier TDK has announced a new battery technology breakthrough. The development could boost Apple’s quest for ever-sleeker devices.

Your favorite Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) devices may be about to get even better with more juice in them. TDK Corp (OTC:TTDKY), a key supplier of Apple, has announced a major breakthrough in solid-state batteries. This could mean substantial performance increases for a range of devices, from headphones to smart wearables.

A Promising Breakthrough in Batteries

According to the Financial Times, TDK’s new battery material offers an energy density of 1,000 watt-hours per liter. That’s nearly 100 times higher density than TDK’s current batteries in mass production.

This battery breakthrough comes at a time when the world’s hunger for energy is growing, and the current AI boom is guzzling power like never before. TDK is hoping for an early commercialization of its new technology. Its new-age batteries will be made of an all-ceramic material. Notably, their high energy density could enable the development of devices that are smaller in size but offer longer operating times.

Could Boost Apple’s Quest for Sleeker Devices

TDK’s technology promises to play a key role in Apple’s quest for ever-sleeker devices. Recently, Apple unveiled its thinnest-ever iPad Pro model. The company is also working on introducing its thinnest iPhone 17 variant, to be launched next year.

Additionally, TDK’s new batteries could play a pivotal role in the EV space, but mass production at larger sizes could be a challenge. Since TDK’s batteries are made up of ceramic material, a larger-sized battery could be more fragile. Still, these are early days for the technology, and another future breakthrough could be on the horizon. At present, TDK commands a nearly 50%-60% market share in small-capacity batteries globally. It plans to ship samples of its new batteries to customers beginning next year.

Is Apple a Buy, Sell, or Hold?

Meanwhile, Apple’s share price is up by nearly 23% over the past three months. Overall, the Street has a Moderate Buy consensus rating on the stock, alongside an average AAPL price target of $209.28.
