Amazon (AMZN) Workers to Hold Union Vote

Story Highlights

Unions are trying to organize workers at many tech companies.

Workers at an Amazon (AMZN) warehouse in North Carolina will vote in February on whether to join a union.

Stay Ahead of the Market:

Workers at the Garner, North Carolina Amazon facility will cast ballots from February 10 to 15 that will decide if they join the Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity & Empowerment (CAUSE) union, which is trying to organize staff at the e-commerce giant.

CAUSE is a grassroots labor group led by current and former employees that has been working to organize Amazon employees at the North Carolina warehouse, which is located outside the City of Raleigh, for three years now.

Labor Headaches

If the election is successful, the North Carolina warehouse will become only the second Amazon site in the U.S. to unionize. Workers at Amazon’s largest warehouse in New York City voted to join the Amazon Labor Union back in 2022. However, that group of unionized workers has struggled to negotiate a contract with Amazon.

Other union elections held at Amazon warehouses in the U.S. have seen workers either reject unionization or the results continue to be disputed in the courts. Last November, a federal judge ordered a third rerun of a union election at an Amazon warehouse located in Alabama. Management at Amazon has vehemently opposed efforts to unionize workers, particularly at its warehouse fulfillment centers.

There is a growing push by unions to try and organize workers at technology companies and beyond. Other companies that are grappling with unionization efforts include Apple (AAPL) and Starbucks (SBUX). This past December, Amazon delivery and warehouse workers went on strike at nine facilities during the busy year-end holidays to try and push the company to come to the bargaining table.
