Tech giant Alphabet’s (GOOGL) DeepMind unit has revealed two new artificial intelligence models that are designed to improve the capabilities of robots. The models, which are known as Gemini Robotics and Gemini Robotics-ER, hope to allow robots to perform a wider range of real-world tasks that require complex actions, such as manipulating objects and advanced spatial understanding.
Interestingly, the Gemini Robotics model is an advanced vision-language-action model that allows robots to directly control physical actions. Meanwhile, the Gemini Robotics-ER model builds on this capability by adding advanced spatial understanding. This will allow robots to navigate and interact with their environment better. DeepMind believes that these models will see progress in three key areas: generality, interactivity, and dexterity.
It is worth noting that the potential applications of these models are significant. For example, Gemini Robotics can tackle complex tasks like origami folding or packing snacks into a Ziploc bag. DeepMind is already working with partners such as Apptronik to integrate the models into robots like the Apollo robot. The Gemini Robotics-ER model is also being tested by certain companies like Boston Dynamics and Agile Robots.
