A Pivot to Munitions at Ford (NYSE:F)?

Story Highlights

A potential Deputy Defense Secretary is looking to Ford for war supplies, and the Shelby Mustang may be making a comeback.

A Pivot to Munitions at Ford (NYSE:F)?

Legacy automaker Ford (F), over the years, has given us a wide range of exciting products and services. Just yesterday, we spotted the SupportBelt, a seatbelt designed for use by those with breast cancer, or recent mastectomy patients. But could Ford be about to get into weapons? That may be more possible than you might think, and shares notched up fractionally in Wednesday afternoon’s trading.

The call for Ford to make such a pivot came from Stephen Feinberg, who serves as CEO of Cerberus Capital Management. Feinberg is also currently being considered as Deputy Secretary of Defense in the Trump administration. And Feinberg is also looking to Ford to handle some domestic weapons production.

Feinberg noted that the United States should start looking to “new companies” when it comes to building hardware for the United States military, and Ford was on the list. In fact, reports noted that Feinberg considers Ford more “…adept at scaling and operations than traditional defense suppliers.” However, Feinberg did acknowledge that there were certain points that had to be addressed beforehand. Such a move would give Ford a new product line to sell, and would also help keep United States military production in the United States.

Return of the Shelby

There is more exciting news afoot for muscle car enthusiasts, as new reports suggest the Shelby may be making a comeback. While the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was lost to us following the 2022 model year, recently revealed documents suggest a 2026 return may be in the cards.

A page found at UAW Local 600’s website featured the lines: “This volume increase is for the 2026 Mustang Shelby GT 500. I can’t wait until we start building engines for such an iconic vehicle with an engine that will be named Legend.” The document also reportedly refers to the Dearborn Engine plant, and some new hires that have taken place therein. While this may not actually come to pass—especially now that the surprise may have been spoiled—the idea of the Shelby’s return is capturing imaginations already.
