What Is the Star-Ranking That Is Shown Next to Analysts and Financial Bloggers?
These stars represent the performance of the analyst or any other financial Expert (such as financial bloggers or company insiders).
It uses TipRanks Star Ranking™ system, which was developed alongside Cornell University Finance Department and incorporates the ratings/transactions since January, 2009.
The calculation combines the Success Rate and Average Return of each financial expert; however the success rate is secondary to the ability of the analyst to generate positive returns. This combination then uses the Z Test to incorporate the significance of the amount of ratings. This allows to determine what combination of success rate and return is statistically more difficult to achieve in order to compare between the different experts.
What Is The Analyst Consensus?
The Analyst Consensus chart that is shown next to the stocks on your holdings’ screen, is based on the Wall Street analysts’ buy/hold/sell recommendations from the last three months.
It is calculated by providing a score to each recommendation as follows:
Buy = 1, Hold = 3, Sell = 5
Then based on the amount of each recommendation on the stock, one of these five consensuses is formed:
‘Strong Buy’: less than or equal to 1.5 score
‘Moderate Buy’: more than 1.5, but less than or equal to 2.5 score
‘Hold’: more than 2.5, but less than or equal to 3.5 score
‘Moderate Sell’: more than 3.5, but less than or equal to 4.5 score
‘Strong Sell’: more than 4.5 score
The Strong Buy/Sell consensuses will only be provided for a stock that has a minimum of 3 recommendations in the past month. Otherwise, its consensus will be normalized to a Moderate Buy/Sell.
Members of the Pro subscription can view also rating and price target consensuses that are based only on the top performing analysts, and consensus sentiments of bloggers, insiders and hedge funds.
What Is the Best Analyst Consensus?
The consensus of the Best Analysts on a stock is based only on those Wall Street analysts which recommendations were most accurate.
The performance measurement incorporates the analysts’ success rates and average returns and is based on TipRanks Star Ranking™ system.
How Is the Daily Return Calculated?
The ‘Daily Return’ of your portfolio equities takes into account the price change between today’s price and the previous close price for each stock, and measures the total weighted average of your portfolio (each stock is weighed based on its percentage of your portfolio).
