Stock Market News Today, 05/07/24 – Indices Little Changed after Fedspeak

Story Highlights

Neel Kashkari thinks that the neutral rate—where monetary policy neither boosts nor slows economic growth—might have shifted upwards.

Last Updated: 4:02 PM EST

Stock indices finished today’s trading little changed. Indeed, the S&P 500 (SPX) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) gained 0.13% and 0.08%, respectively. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq 100 (NDX) fell 0.01%. Earlier today, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari shared his thoughts on the U.S. economy and the effectiveness of current monetary policy.

He pointed out that progress towards a lower inflation rate has stalled despite the aggressive rate hikes by the Federal Reserve in 2022 and 2023. As a result, he now thinks that the neutral rate—where monetary policy neither boosts nor slows economic growth—might have shifted upwards.

Still, Kashkari suggested that he prefers to hold rates steady for now while keeping an eye on the economy’s performance. However, he indicated that if inflation remains around 3%, the Fed might consider raising rates, although he doesn’t expect this in the near term.
